A few days ago
I called you baby,
watched your eyes
close slowly,
studied your little hands
while you were fading fast into sleep.
Wondered how the life
inside my contracting belly
would change the first
face where I first found
astounding love.
Now you hold that little life,
with the hands I thought
so small a few days ago
cupping even smaller hands.

that I should no longer call you baby.
But I know
that even when your hands
span my own
I'll still be calling you
my baby.
